Omarchy Hardware

Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD with Omarchy

Twenty-four exact-model reports show strong performance and upgradeability, but sleep, Qualcomm wireless, battery life and the basic display make configuration choice matter.

Compiled from 24 exact-model field reports: six on GitHub, 12 on Reddit, five on Arch Linux Forums and one on EndeavourOS Forum. Report mix: four Omarchy · seven Arch Linux · one Arch-based · 12 other Linux Updated

Bottom line

The four direct Omarchy reports are not a clean bill of health: they cover a display that would not wake after lid-close suspend, a system-wide file-picker freeze, a Limine-specific firmware-update workaround and a Caps Lock regression. The broader Arch and Linux record is more encouraging about installation, desktop use and development performance, but it also makes sleep and Qualcomm wireless the model's most persistent risk areas. Arch reports are the closest transferable evidence here; reports from other distributions are labeled separately and should be treated as warnings or supporting context, not Omarchy results.

Should you use or buy it?

This is best suited to plugged or docked development and to buyers who value replaceable memory, an accessible SSD and much stronger compute than older ThinkPads. If buying, prefer the 100% sRGB low-power panel over the basic 45% NTSC panel and favor the NFA725A over the NCM825 based on the better results in this corpus. During the return period, test cold boot from your installer, repeated suspend and wake, Bluetooth audio, Wi-Fi after several sleep cycles and battery life under your actual workload.

Detailed findings

Install and boot

Mixed results

Slackware, Ubuntu and Fedora owners completed installation, and the Fedora owner found the drivers working immediately. A Ryzen 5 Pro 8540U owner on BIOS 1.17 tried several USB-writing tools but could not boot Arch media: the screen went black and returned to the firmware menu.

In practice Most retained installs succeeded, but Arch installation media is not guaranteed to boot on every firmware and hardware configuration. One Slackware owner also had to enable Microsoft's third-party UEFI certificate authority before Linux would start.

Desktop and graphics

Working reports

Owners across Slackware, Ubuntu, Arch and Fedora describe responsive desktop use. The Fedora owner ran multiple Docker containers and light games on the Radeon 780M, while an Arch owner called the Ryzen 7 Pro 8840U the machine's clearest strength.

In practice The corpus supports ordinary desktop and development use on the integrated Radeon graphics. It does not provide a controlled Omarchy benchmark.

Internal display and brightness

Mixed results

The low-power IPS review panel measured 439 nits and full sRGB coverage, while an Arch owner found the basic 45% NTSC panel washed out and yellow. An Ubuntu OLED owner stopped panel glitches with amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x10, and a Fedora owner reported video artifacts in Blink-based browsers but not Firefox.

In practice Panel choice affects both image quality and Linux behavior. The 100% sRGB low-power IPS option has the strongest all-around evidence; the OLED and basic IPS configurations carry different compromises.

Keyboard, hotkeys and backlight

Mixed results

The current exact-model ArchWiki maps the keyboard and most function keys as working, and a Fedora owner reported working hotkeys. One Ubuntu owner had a keyboard failure after sleep, while an Omarchy 4.0.2 owner later reported that Caps Lock stopped working or became stuck after an update.

In practice General keyboard use is established, but the two failure reports mean hotkeys and repeated wake cycles deserve explicit testing. Owner opinions about key feel also vary sharply by configuration and comparison machine.

Touchpad and pointing

Mixed results

The current exact-model ArchWiki lists the touchpad as working, and Ubuntu owners reported it working out of the box. A Slackware owner found the Elan touchpad jumpy and disabled tap-to-click.

In practice The mixed result may depend on the desktop or input configuration; the evidence does not support calling the touchpad either universally clean or universally broken.

Fingerprint and biometrics

Working reports

One exact-model Linux owner reported that the optional fingerprint reader worked through fprint.

In practice This is one positive Linux result, not a direct Omarchy result. Configurations without the optional power-button reader have no fingerprint hardware to enable.

Sources ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD Linux hibernation notes

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

Mixed results

The current exact-model ArchWiki lists Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as working, and several owners had working Wi-Fi. Other reports cover an NCM825 suspend blocker, a linux-firmware regression that removed Wi-Fi after reboot, severe speed drops and Bluetooth headsets that paired without an audio connection until a later kernel.

In practice The NFA725A has the better record in this corpus, but neither Qualcomm path is issue-free. The firmware thread records that an upstream correction later landed, and the support project documents a module-reset workaround for post-suspend slowdown; both are version-sensitive results.

Speakers, microphone and audio

Working reports

The current exact-model ArchWiki lists the built-in audio device as working. Slackware and Ubuntu owners also reported working internal sound.

In practice Built-in audio has a consistent Linux baseline, but no retained report separately tests the microphone under Omarchy. The kernel-sensitive Bluetooth-headset result is tracked under wireless because it follows the NCM825 radio path.

Sources ArchWiki Lenovo ThinkPad T14 AMD Gen 5, ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD Linux owner review, ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD Ubuntu owner review

Camera

Working reports

The current exact-model ArchWiki lists the webcam as working. An Arch owner used the camera and found its image substantially better than the camera in an older T480s.

In practice Basic webcam output has direct Arch evidence. Check the exact configuration before buying because Lenovo also sold an infrared-equipped version and rare special-bid machines without a camera; no retained Omarchy report establishes infrared login.

Suspend and resume

Mixed results

The largest issue cluster concerns s2idle, wake and hibernation. Reports include 27% loss in three hours, about 50% loss in two hours, ath12k blocking suspend, a blank internal display after wake, failed USB-C wake and repeatable hibernation freezes. Other owners report normal suspend or restored it with acpi.ec_no_wakeup=1 and, for hibernation, additional systemd and ACPI changes.

In practice Working suspend exists, but it is configuration-sensitive and regressions have occurred. Test lid wake, AC connection, docked wake and overnight drain separately; a workaround that fixes one path does not establish the others.

External displays and docks

Mixed results

One Arch owner used a Dell U4924DW as the primary display over USB-C, establishing working docked output. That owner could not wake the sleeping laptop by reconnecting USB-C, and a separate hibernation report found failures were more likely with a dock and external monitor attached.

In practice USB-C display output can work while wake behavior remains unreliable. Docked buyers should test display, charging, cold start, s2idle wake and hibernation as separate functions.

Battery, power and thermals

Mixed results

Linux battery reports range from about two hours under an IDE, Docker and Chrome to six to eight hours in lighter use; one tuned owner saw estimates near 10 hours. An Arch owner found the underside hot during browsing, while the measured Windows review recorded 10 hours 18 minutes at 150 nits, a 61.5 C bottom hotspot and no sustained-load throttling at 23 watts.

In practice Workload, panel, power policy and test method matter more than a single headline number. The controlled battery and thermal figures show hardware capacity under Windows, not Omarchy efficiency; Linux software telemetry can also misstate USB-C voltage even when measured power delivery is normal.

Daily use

Battery life follows the workload

About two hours with Docker-heavy coding; roughly six to eight hours in lighter Linux use

One Fedora owner initially blamed the laptop, then found that stopping Docker containers raised runtime from about two to 2.5 hours to roughly six. Other owners report three to 5.5 hours, six to eight hours or a tuned estimate near 10 hours. Those are different configurations and workloads, not interchangeable benchmark results.

The display option changes the machine

The basic panel is widely compromised; the low-power IPS has the best balanced evidence

An Arch owner sold a unit whose 45% NTSC LG panel looked washed out and yellow. The measured low-power IPS unit reached 439 nits with full sRGB coverage and no PWM, although its response time was slow. The OLED has stronger contrast and one happy Linux owner, but that owner needed a panel-self-refresh workaround and acknowledged the battery tradeoff.

Heat depends on load and where you measure it

Quiet in light use for one owner; hot on the lap for another

The dissatisfied Arch owner found the bottom uncomfortable even during browsing and video, though the fan stayed quiet. A Fedora owner saw 72 C in heavier games. Notebookcheck measured a 61.5 C bottom hotspot and 47.2 dB(A) at maximum fan speed under controlled load, but no throttling after an hour at a sustained 23 watts.

Sources ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD Arch owner review, ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD Fedora development report, Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD review

Upgradeability is a real advantage

Two memory slots, one standard M.2 SSD and accessible internal parts

A Fedora owner upgraded a base configuration to 64 GB of memory and a 2 TB SSD. Another owner praised the maintenance access. The wireless adapter is soldered, so choosing the radio correctly at purchase matters more than the memory or storage configuration.

Sources ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD Fedora development report, ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD Arch owner review, ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD platform specifications

Performance

Software development

Strong compute and ample memory, with a large battery penalty from active containers

A Fedora developer ran multiple Docker instances on a 64 GB configuration without a performance complaint, but an IDE, one Docker instance and four to six Chrome tabs reduced battery life to two to 2.5 hours. Another Linux owner compiled a kernel in 275 seconds in high-performance mode and 292 seconds in medium mode, versus 813 seconds on an older T480s.

Sources ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD Fedora development report, ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD Linux owner review

Integrated graphics and lighter games

3DMark 11 score: 11,679 on Radeon 780M in the Windows review

Owners report playable EVE Online and Wii or GameCube emulation, and the review places the Radeon 780M far ahead of older integrated graphics. Modern demanding games still require reduced settings. The 3DMark result measures Windows hardware capacity, not Omarchy gaming performance.

Sources ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD Fedora development report, ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD Linux hibernation notes, Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD review

Sustained CPU work

High peak performance; sustained results differ by power mode and test method

One owner saw a long kernel compile reach 96 C and throttle, while Notebookcheck found no throttling after an hour at a sustained 23 watts. The disagreement is useful: cooling behavior depends on power policy, workload and measurement rather than the processor name alone.
